Top Tips

Day 1 - Read the words. Discuss what the words mean. Spelling lists often have a pattern where the words contain the same sound. Can your child spot any digraphs/trigraphs or ticky parts in the words? Are there any words your child already knows how to spell? We would sound them out and if my child could tell me the sounds they could hear correctly I ticked the words off the list.

Day 2 - Look and Copy. This will help them to identify any spelling patterns. This does not have to be using a pencil!

Day 3 - Cover and Make. Once they have made/written the word help them to check if they are correct. If not, identify their mistake and have a look at the correct spelling.

Day 4 - Spell it. Say the word and see whether your child can write it down.
