What is Phonics?

Phonics is a method of teaching children how to read and write by matching what they hear to what they see written down. Your child will match spoken sounds to individual letters or groups of letters that represent one sound.

Phonics is the prime approach used in schools to teach early reading and is taught daily. It is taught systematically which means the sounds aren't taught in alphabetical order. The sound cards are included in the Reception Phase 2-4 Flashcard Pack.

By teaching them in a different order, we can begin to make words straight away. The Phase 2 Words and Captions Pack contains lots of words made up of Phase 2 sounds.

A written language is basically a kind of code. By teaching phonics we help children to crack that code. When children understand how the letters correspond to sounds they can use their phonics

knowledge to sound out and read the words e.g. s-a-p, sap.
