Welcome to my Tailor Your Toys series where I take a toy and show you how to add a phonics twist. Today its Hungry Hippos!
Before you play, use a Sharpie to write letters on the balls. If your child has started to learn digraphs, where 2 letters work together to make one sound e.g. sh, make sure to write both letters on the same ball.
Race to see how can eat the most letters. This game is really good for strengthening your child's hands for writing.
Look at the balls and say the sounds. Remember not to add an 'uh' sound e.g. sssss not suh. This will make the next stage easier.
Push 3 balls into playdough to create a CVC word. CVC words are made using a consonant vowel consonant e.g. sip. Say each sound then blend them together to say the word e.g. s-i-p, sip.
Support:
If your child finds these tricky to blend try VC words (vowel consonant) e.g. i-t, it.
Extend:
If your child has started to recognise digraphs you could make CVC words that contain them e.g. sh-i-p, ship.
