One Minute Flip

Choose a selection of tricky word cards or sound cards that your child is working on. Place them face down on the table.

Set a timer for one minute. Pick a card, turn it over and read it.

If your child gets it right place it face up. If they don't know it, help them with the word/sound and place it face down so you can come back to it.

See how many they can turn over before the timer runs out.

You could play this game with tricky words or sounds.

Support:

This game will help your child to read words automatically which helps with reading fluency. But if there’s a word they don’t know encourage them to sound it out instead of guessing. You could also use the heart word cards to help them read tricky words which contain a part that breaks the rules or a sound they haven't been taught yet in white.

Tell your child what sound the white part makes then help them to sound out and blend the word. For example in the word said the letters a and i are used to represent the e sound. We can sound out the word s-e-d, said.
