Choose a phase
During Phase 1, children explore sounds, but aren't taught what the letters look like, which is why the digital flashcards start with Phase 2.

Click the phases in the menu at the top to quickly find the sounds your child is working on.
Below is a rough guide but all children progress at different rates so it is worth starting with Phase 2 and working through them.

Phase 2 - Reception (autumn term)
Phase 3 - Reception (generally spring term)
Phase 4 - Reception (summer term)
Phase 5 - Year 1
Press the play button to hear the sound.

Single letters have a sound button underneath to show that one letter is making one sound.

When two letters work together to make one sound (digraph) or three letters (trigraph), you will see a sound line underneath them.
Sounds
The Phase 5 sounds look different but sound the same as ones from Phases 2 or 3. These are shown in the top right-hand corner of the card to support your child.

Scroll down for words containing that sound or click the arrow at the top to see the next sound.
Oral Blending
The phase 2 and 3 picture cards are designed to help your child with oral blending, which is an important stage of learning to read.

Begin with the card that has no letters. Press the sound talk button so your child can hear the word being sounded out. Can they push the sounds together to make the word? Press the blend button to listen to the word
Click the arrow to reveal the letters. Can they spot the sound written down?

Alternatively, press blend so your child can hear the whole word. Can they sound it out? This is oral segmenting and will help with spelling skills.
Blending
Once your child has learnt some sounds, they can begin reading. Use the word cards below each sound to help your child practise words containing that sound.
Support:
Press the sound talk button to hear how the word is sounded out. Can your child blend the sounds to make the word? Press blend to check if they are correct.

If they find it tricky to spot digraphs/trigraphs where two/three letters work together to make one sound, click the arrow to reveal the sound buttons and sound lines.
Tricky Words
Some words might be tricky to decode because they break the rules or contain a sound that hasn't been taught yet. You might hear them referred to as tricky words, common exception words or sight words.
Support:
Click the arrow to reveal sound lines and buttons to help your child sound out the word.
The part written in black is how we would expect to see it, but the white part might not look how you would expect. This is the tricky part that we need to learn off by heart.
